International Mother Language Day
Mohamed Sheikh Elmi

International Mother Language Day was established by The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote cultural and linguistic diversity and encourage multilingualism, as a consequence of a Bangladeshi initiative. UNESCO has been commemorating International Mother Language Day since February 21, 2000.

This day serves as a reminder of the value of multilingualism, as well as an opportunity to urge individuals to learn in their native tongues.   Mother tongue-based multilingual education in the early stages of schooling ensures better understanding on the part of the students and works towards preserving the language.

Global efforts must be undertaken to preserve all languages.  Online and digital resources should be utilized in preserving languages and making them available and accessible to all.
